Since 2011 a range of cultural and social projects provided by committed citizens, initiatives and organisations have complemented Tempelhofer Feld’s array of recreational activities in various ways.
After issuing public tenders, Tempelhof Projekt GmbH and Grün Berlin GmbH worked together with the Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment to select projects to promote Tempelhofer Feld’s development, create attractive leisure and recreational activities, and implement new entrepreneurial, social and cultural ideas.
The projects were chosen by a jury made up of members from the fields of politics, administration and civil society. In a two-phase process around 38 projects in areas such as gardening, education, art and culture, sport and the neighbourhood were selected from around 270 applications. 19 projects on Tempelhofer Feld now regularly exchange views and ideas, and provide inspiration for everyone involved.
The Tempelhofer Feld projects tie in with the space’s existing potential and needs of the local area, making use of existing resources, and their work is based on passion and conviction. One special feature of Tempelhof airfield’s development is that planning is continuing while the site is in use. This demands a high degree of responsibility, sensitivity and flexibility from everyone involved, including those responsible for the projects, the projects themselves and visitors seeking rest and recreation.
In coming months and years a broad public discourse will be held on successfully integrating the projects into the development of this unique place in the long term to secure Tempelhofer Feld as a free space for people who want to help shape their city and implement their ideas in future.
