Soviet Memorial in Treptow

Please note: Until autumn 2021 there are construction works in the right back part of the Soviet Memorial in Treptower Park. This part of the Memorial will not be accessible until the works are finished.

There are three large Soviet Memorials in Berlin: in Tiergarten, in Treptower Park and in Volkspark Schönholzer Heide. They were erected shortly after the end of the Second World War to commemorate the fallen soldiers of the Red Army. The monuments are important historical sites and places of remembrance, not least because of their monumental design.

The three large Soviet Memorials represent a special responsibility for Berlin. Grün Berlin's task is to maintain the ensembles of buildings and green spaces with due care and to develop them in a quality manner. This also includes maintaining the open spaces with dignity and coordinating and accompanying renovation measures on the buildings.

Grün Berlin GmbH has been carrying out these tasks for the Berlin Senate Department at the Soviet Memorial in Treptower Park since 1995. The largest Soviet Memorial in Berlin was built between 1946 and 1949. The 10-hectare memorial was built according to the designs of a Soviet design collective under the direction of the architect Yakov S. Belopolski, the sculptor Yevgeny V. Vuchetich, the painter Alexander A. Gorpenko and the engineer Sarra S. Walerius. The artistic design of the memorial was explicitly intended to focus on the liberation from National Socialism.

The main element of the memorial is the mausoleum with a bronze statue of a Soviet soldier weighing 70 tonnes and standing 11.6 metres high. On his arm, the soldier carries a rescued German child. A shattered swastika lies at his feet. His gaze falls on the other end of the complex: Here stands the sculpture of "Mother Homeland". From there, a promenade flanked by mourning birches leads through two huge stylised flags made of red granite to the actual grove of honour. A total of more than 7,000 fallen Soviet soldiers were buried in the grounds.
