Tegeler Stadtheide landscape park

From airfield to landscape park

In the coming years, the site of the former Tegel Airport will develop into a showcase project for sustainable, innovative and future-proof urban development. Grün Berlin has taken on the task of gradually improving the former airfield and taxiway (Tegeler Stadtheide) in 2021.

The result is a unique leisure and recreational space for the metropolis of Berlin and at the same time a conservation reserve for flora and fauna. The development of the landscape park is a central component of the vision of the "subsequent use of Tegel Airport" and will create the ecological balance for the construction measures of the Urban Tech Republic and the Schumacher Quartier.

The aim is to create a new type of park on a prospective 190 hectares of land, a landscape park in which nature is protected and new perspectives for visitors from Berlin and around the world are created at the same time.

The site is located in the south of the Reinickendorf district, surrounded by various city neighbourhoods, the Jungfernheide forest, the airport lake and various garden colonies. The site, which at times handled up to 24 million passengers per year, will now become a place where people can live and work, educate themselves, exchange ideas, relax and spend their leisure time actively - and where biodiversity is cultivated and interdisciplinary research is established at the same time.

Project progress

Since 2022, around 60 hectares of the site have already been cleared as part of an ecologically supervised explosive ordnance clearance programme. The completion of the explosive ordnance clearance is a basic prerequisite for the implementation of the plans presented in February 2024. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026. Completion and opening is planned for spring 2029.

Explore Tegeler Stadtheide

In April 2024, Campus Stadt Natur expanded its programme to include additional guided tours to give interested parties an insight into the development of the site, even during the ongoing construction work. The tours, which have been offered since 2022, are part of Grün Berlin's free environmental education programme and have now been expanded to include a focus on open space planning. During the approximately two-hour tours, participants have the opportunity to explore the Tegeler Stadtheide by bike and electric car and learn more about the flora and fauna worth protecting and the transformation of the area.
