Döberitzer Grünzug

In the heart of Berlin, the Döberitzer Grünzug is a new public space that combines urban nature, neighbourhood and urban development over an area of around 4.5 hectares. Between Lehrter Strasse and Europacity, a formerly derelict area is being transformed into a versatile green space - as a green connection and lively place to spend time, exercise and meet in a changing urban neighbourhood.

The first construction phase, covering an area of 2.6 hectares, has been open to the public since December 2024. A 1.1-kilometre-long main path runs along the railway tracks in a north-south direction and connects neighbouring districts in a direct, comfortable way for the first time. The barrier-free route, supplemented by seating and open crossings, invites people to cross, linger and play - both as an everyday path and as a place to slow down.

Urban nature with added value

The Döberitz green corridor was designed with the surrounding area in mind from the outset: input from the neighbourhood was incorporated into the design, for example in the path layout or the planned play area. This is being created in close consultation with residents and expands the neighbourhood with high-quality open spaces - close to residential areas, accessible to the public and usable by all generations.

At the same time, the green corridor strengthens the city centre's ecological infrastructure: over 140 newly planted trees and shrubs as well as site-appropriate trees and shrubs improve the microclimate, promote biodiversity and enable decentralised rainwater infiltration. The robust selection of plants reduces the amount of maintenance required while conserving resources.

The project also contributes to spatial and social integration: it shortens distances, opens up previously inaccessible areas and creates new impetus for the immediate neighbourhood. As a public open space with a high quality of stay, the green corridor acts as a bridge between existing neighbourhoods, new development areas and local public transport - and at the same time offers potential for local businesses and urban life.

The first construction phase will be completed by the end of 2026 with additional play and recreational areas, while the second construction phase will begin following the completion of the S21 urban railway line. It is already clear today that the Döberitz green corridor is more than just a landscaping measure - it is a contribution to an open, climate-proof and socially integrated city centre that combines quality of life with ecological impact.
