Development of subsections "Berlin Wall green corridor"
The "Mauergrünzug" project focuses on the development of a green corridor along the Wall Trail on the former border strip between the districts of Pankow, Mitte and Reinickendorf. The future green corridor will provide the necessary ecological compensation for the new mainline railway tracks south of Südkreuz station. The expansion will protect nature in the long term, while creating new recreational areas for local residents and preserving the city's history. The planned measures are expected to start in 2025.
The aim is to create a continuous green link from the northern end of the Mauerpark green corridor, which currently ends at the pedestrian ramp leading to Norwegerstrasse from the Behmstrasse bridge, to Bürgerpark Pankow. Other areas to the north of the Mauergrünzug will also be included in the development. These include the areas between Nordgraben, Wilhelmsruher Damm and Uhlandstraße and Rausendorffweg (footpath on the eastern edge of the Märkisches Viertel neighbourhood). The northern end of the Mauergrünzug will also be integrated into the planning. At this point, the previously heavily utilised agricultural areas will be transformed into usable green spaces and an entrance to the recreational area will be created at the beginning of the green corridor.
Green connection preserves history
The "Wall green corridor" is being developed along the original Wall structure, watchtowers and other historical relics. In the future, it will extend from the Mauerpark to the Barnim Nature Park. The further development of the approximately 85,000 square metre area as a green connection and recreational space will contribute to a sustainable, climate-resilient and liveable city. As part of the realisation, invasive plants will be removed in a total of ten sub-areas, asphalted areas will be unsealed and landscaped with green spaces, paths and woodland planting, creating replacement habitats for endangered sand lizards, among other things.
Recreation and leisure
Newly laid out paths and new nature experience and leisure areas will allow neighbours to relax in a green environment and provide space for a variety of leisure activities. The nature experience area in particular will create an educational environment in which children can explore nature on a prospective 2,000 square metres.
Together with the unsealing of the 4th of July square in Steglitz-Zehlendorf, the development of the sections of the Wall green corridor along the former border strip between the districts of Pankow, Mitte and Reinickendorf represents an important step towards environmentally friendly and sustainable urban development. Together, they are measures within the framework of the "off-track compensation and replacement measures" in connection with the "reconstruction of the Dresden railway". To enable new long-distance railway tracks to be built to the east of the existing S-Bahn line south of Südkreuz station, the measures compensate for the necessary interventions in the natural environment and create ecological compensation. The project is being planned and realised by Grün Berlin GmbH on behalf of DB Netz AG.
